Types of Keys Available in the Market

The keys play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of your belongings. In terms of tracing back to history, 6000 years ago, the keys were used to be made up of wood. As the world progressed and the need for safety arose in the industrial ecosystem, metal keys became popular, they provided higher strength and safety. The modern-day keys are also inspired by the historical aspects of design but ensure more safety as compared to the previous ones. In the contemporary world, mechanics and engineering have attained advancement to offer numerous types of keys that can be used for a variety of purposes.

As there are a large number of door locks available in the market these days, a specific type of lock is only compatible with the key that is designed as per its specifications. This helps in ensuring safety and also makes it a tough job for thieves to compromise the security of your home or office.

Why is it important to know about keys?

As locks are a crucial part of our lives, it is quite obvious that we should have good knowledge about them. While buying a lock, having good knowledge of the keys is always handy. A more secure key would make it more difficult to pick the lock and duplicate as well. Every key has a different design and mechanism to lock/unlock the doors. It is quite an interesting fact to know that the keys featuring different design and structure also relates to the level of security.

Types of Keys – Ensuring Safety of Your Belongings

1. Lever Keys

Lever Keys are quite a popular type of keys used in the padlocks, furniture locks etc. These keys are usually made up of Iron and Brass featuring angular patterns which are cut-outs on the key head according to which the levers are placed. The bright nickel electroplating makes the key long-lasting, anti-corrosive and durable. One important aspect to note here is that higher the Levers in the locks, more cutouts are required on the keys. Which increases the safety, security and the key combinations of the locks.

These lever keys can be categorised into multiple types –

Normal Lever Keys

The Normal Lever Keys are mostly used for padlocks. These keys are not very large in size but come in various sizes according to the lever on the locks.

As the name suggests, the long lever keys are quite larger in size. These keys are commonly used in cupboard and mortise handle locks. It is also used widely in the Shutter and Godown locks due to their size, which makes it easy to use.

2. Pin Tumbler Keys

These types of keys are used in all types of locks as they are more secure than the Lever Keys. The Pin Tumbler Mechanism is a lock mechanism that uses pins of varying lengths to prevent the lock from opening without the correct key (as illustrated in images below),

Cross Keys –

These keys are also known as 4-way keys and are used in a variety of Shutter and Godown Locks at shops, godowns and warehouses. They work on the Pin Tumbler Mechanism for the functioning of the lock. These types of keys are not very common in the market due to the expensive cost.
